Conondale: Toddler hit by tailgate on horse float
Posted on 06-Dec-2011
The AGL Action Rescue Helicopter has returned to base after treating and transporting a 3 year old who suffered head injuries when she was struck on the right hand side of her head when the tailgate of a horse float fell.
The accident happened on a private property on the Maleny – Kenilworth Rd approximately 17km west of Maleny township.
Pilot Wayne Thompson said “we arrived on scene at 1.30pm to find a very ill 3 year old girl. She needed to be intubated and ventilated by our medical crew. These are the jobs that get to you, the ones when little children are involved and especially when you are a parent” .

The little girls’ father indicated they had been out to buy some pigs that morning and they were still in the horse float when the accident happened.
”When children are injured we quite often take an escort along," said Mr Thompson, "and in this case we took the Dad. He remained quite calm and we tried to comfort him by explaining what was happening and where we were going”.
The little girl was in a serious but stable condition and was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
