Double Island Point: tourist rescued at sea

Posted on 06-Jan-2012

Surf Lifesavers and the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter went to the aid of an Irish tourist swept out to sea this morning (Friday).

The 25 year old man was caught in a rip off the beach at Double Island Point.  His brother swam out to assist him and the pair were able to clamber onto rocks before surf lifesavers helped them to safety.

The AGL Action Rescue Helicopter landed on the beach near the lighthouse and treated the man for scratches, abrasions and possible fractured ribs.

The tourist was airlifted to Nambour General Hospital in a stable condition.

Flight Paramedic Tony Armstrong said the incident serves as a timely reminder to beach goers to swim only between the red and yellow flags.  "He was quite lucky the rocks were there, he wasn't used to the conditions, tourists and swimmers in general need to be aware that surf conditions can change really quickly."
